Hi viz when airside

macca's picture

I guess the thought and safety police have caught up with us 'cos it looks like very soon we'll all have to sport hi-viz when airside. The next thing will be having to walk in pairs holding hands and having a lollipop man (oops sorry, person) to see us across to the hangars. On the plus side I suppose it should make it easier to spot the bits if anyone walks into a prop. Hard hat, safety glasses, ear defenders and steel toecaps next - can't wait.

Hi Nick et all, I am wondering if you were able to put the picture of the Loving Cup from 1929, Sept 14th Leicestershire Aero Club anywhere on your website. I haven't heard from anyone yet regarding it's origin and remain curious. Regards from Canada Maureen

Grumman Fly-in 1st December

Just to let you know that once again the AYA/Grumpy Gang of Grumman flyers will be invading you and partaking of your delicious restaurant food on 1st December. I expect about 10 aircraft. 20 people or so, We have a fallback date of the 8th in case of weather, and there are one or two who can't make the 1st, who may come on the 8th anyway.

Kind regards

Wartime Photos of Braunstone airport

Hi

Came to this site through Google and wondered if you had any 2nd world war photos of the airport. My mother-in-law worked there when it was No. 7 EFTS (Elementary Flying Training School) for the R.A.F. She worked for Reid & Sigrist. She is now 86 and wrote her memoirs a few years ago, which I am going to get printed for her. If you have perhaps you could e-mail me.

Thanks

Historic Aircraft Association - annual symposium -2007

The HAA is organising this event at the RAF Museum, Cosford on Sunday 18th November 2007. The programme should be of huge interest to all who enjoy airshows and historic aircraft in any shape or form. Attendance is not expensive and all will be welcome. The added attraction of the new venue and the "Cold War" museum should make it an event not to be missed.

A document with full information on this event may be downloaded from http://www.aopa.co.uk/downloads/HAA.pdf.

Additional information on the HAA and its activities may be found at -

Hope to see you there.

Air Display

I am a fan of aircraft. I live in centre of Leicester.I can just see the airport from where i live. Sunday 9th september i saw the bf109 and others display and it was good to see them.I listen on my scanner. When will the air display be here again? Love to see Red Arrows display at Leicester? they past through but dont display? And will the Vulcan display too?I still have the programmes from when the air display was on, dateing back from 1984. What happend to the air racing?

Air Display

Hi Richard,
Glad that you enjoyed the aircraft yesterday, We have no plans to resurrect the flying displays of old, as the insurance cost and other things would leave the aero club making a loss, as for the Vulcan we, like you, await its return to the sky, but have no information as to when and if it will return to the display circuit, or indeed if it will continue to live at Bruntingthorpe.
Sorry that we cant be more positive but keep monitoring the website "You Never Know"

Visit to Leicester

Hello to all,

Did my first land away with my instructor today from Tatenhill. I found the facilities at Leicester to be excellent. A very impressive lounge and bar, very clean and very well run, friendly staff too. The Aerodrome was well presented and easy to taxi on, and good information from the A/G radio. Looking forward to visiting again.

News and Events Story

Hi Guys,

This is an email to let you know that I have added a story and a link to your aeroclub, to our website www.adelaidebiplanes.com.au in the News and Events section, about one of your members, John Ainsworth who came to visit us here in South Australia.

The story is also about a Piper Super Cub, G-BVIW, much loved by us as a family, that now lives at your airfield.

Give her a pat from us,

Grob 109b

As a member of East Staffordshire Flying Club, I used to visit Leicester in my Grob 109b G-BMMP for a cup of tea in their rather pleasant restaurant.

We now have a share for sale in this machine for anyone who wishes to fly something new and unusual and different from the run of the mill aircraft.

Fly at 80 kts economy cruise, 3.5 gph avgas, a GRP Aircraft, a 61 foot laminar flow wing with carbon fibre main spars with all mods, powerful airbrakes, well maintained engine and a capability in clear air of a range in excess of 600 nm on a full tank, perfect for distance touring. Add to that a spacious cockpit that gives the pilot nearly all round visibility, a machine that stands out from the rest with its sleek steamlined aerodynamic lines. The Grob is rated as a TMG (touring motor glider.

For more details, please contact me.

Share in Grob G-BMMB

Can you please quote the statistics ( financial and otherwise ), of this ownership share. I am considering returning to the sport and re-activating my PPL. Regards Gerard Jordan Email:- .

Made it at last!

I started learning to fly at Leicester in 1972 and managed to put on 21 hours in 2 years (too slow) but then gave up cos of the three Ms - Marriage, Mortgage and Money (lack of).

Neville Kempton was my principal instructor with Peter Green as 2nd. Can't remember who was CFI in those days. Aircraft included G-BAMC, G-AZLY and G-AYPK.

I pleased to say that after over 30 years of non flying, I took it up again in 2005 and have just got my JAR PPL at Fairoaks (EGTF) and have bought a share in a PA28-181.

I have never forgotten those heady days back in the early 70s. They inspired me and although it has taken a long time, I would not have got there had I not had the 'Leicester' experience all those years ago. Thanks all.

Hope to fly in before too long to renew associations.

LAC

Why don't you have the air show anymore????

Airshow

The new rules regarding health and safety are too stringent and costly, however from time to time, visiting warbirds do visit and can be seen at close quarters. Look for details of the club day as a large Number of aircraft are planning to visit

landing fees

Dear Airfield manager

I write on behalf of myself and fellow microlight pilots throughout the midlands region. On many occasion a group of pilots arrange a visit to a local airfield for breakfast, lunch and generally a day's aviation. We appreciate that airfields have running costs but for us visiting Leicester's facilities is more expensive than most. Many of the airports offer a landing fee to microlights of £5 to in some cases £3.

I hope you are able to consider a lower fee for microlights as many pilots are looking at where to visit over the summer months. We would like to increase the visiting traffic to Leicester, all of us more than willing to participate in food and beverages purchases on a regular basis.

Landing fees

We charge all aircraft using the runways the same, as they are using the same site facilities including runways, maintainance, radio and fire cover but as we promote all types of aviation, micro lites are still most welcome.

Best regards

Now a commercial pilot

I learnt to fly with Andy Hart back in 1994 in G:LEIC at the time i could not see how i would ever fly large aircraft. 13 years later and a lot of hard work, time and money I now fly the Airbus A319 for easyjet. I would like to say a big thank-you to all at Leicester aeroclub for starting me off on my dream. Life is now great at 39,000ft on a daily basis.

Damian Hollingbery

Congratulations

Congratulations Damian, out if interest which routes do you fly

Hi all, I fly from bristol

Hi all,

I fly from bristol to all the main europe routes, here are just a few Malaga, Alicante, Maderia, Gdanks, Prague, Krakow, Geneva, Palma, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Paris, La Rochel, Nice, Venice, Rome, Tolouse, Madrid, Amsterdam and the list goes on!

PS just got my ATPL :0)

Lessons and club

I had my first trial flying lesson bought as a gift for me at Leicester in 1999 where i was unexpectedly bitten by the bug. From that point on i waited with great anticipation for the next lesson. After two excellent instructors and 3 solos other events prevented me from continuing.
After almost 4 years my partner unwittingly bought me a gift lesson in a fixed wing microlight and we crossed through Leicesters' overhead ... oh dear here i go again!!!
Leicester was a great club to be a member of with excellent training facilities , a superb restaurant and friendly down to earth staff . I used to enjoy sitting at the panoramic window in the restaurant with my children listening to ooohs! and aaahs! as the differrent aircraft came and went.
Well i've begun to put my pennies aside and hopefully one day soon i'll be back ... if you'll have me.
Regards to all and thanks for some wonderfull memories.

Avro Vulcan XH558

Is everyone at LAC looking forward to the sight & sound of Avro Vulcan XH558 over Leicestershire in the not so distance future ? ? Are you going to ask her for a flypast ? ?

When will the Vulcan take to the air

When will she be airborne again ?

If everything goes according

If everything goes according to plan I believe the first flight will be in May sometime after extensive ground tests have taken place, its all hush hush as they don't want thousands of people turning to see her first flight, her first public display is planned for the 17th June in London, Re the 25th anniversary of the Falklands war, the team of 30 engineers at Bruntingthorpe all working very long hours to ensure the project runs to plan, we still need to keep raising funds to ensure she stays flying, so if anyone LAC can help us with an ideas please contact me, Regards Dickon, dickon123@ntlworld.com

Greetings

Hi there,

Wow - the website's changed a bit! Very slick.

I took my skills test with the man, the legend, John Pugh last summer after being shown the ropes by Dave Biddles.

Great flying at LAC - spot on place.

Got the bug and now here I am nearly at the end of ATPL groundschool. Looking forward to getting stuck in to flying again.

Hope everyone's well,

Mike

Possible Microlight Flying in the U.S. (Texas)

We have a flying club in Texas just north of Dallas and thought it would be an interesting venture to see if any pilots from England would be interested in participating in an exchange program.
It might be fun to find a pilot (or preferably a few) who might want to come here sometime, stay with us for a few days to experience the skys over Texas. Then have a few of us come over to your beautiful country to experience some flying there.

If you, or anyone you know would be interested, please feel free to email me back.

THANKS,
Mike Owens

PS - My personal plane is a new SportCruiser made by Czech Air (see photos @ http://www.airplane.cz/sportcruiser.htm)
We have several Light Sport Pilots, Ultralight Pilots, and regular Cessna Private Pilot guys interested.

Just Asking

I am already a pilot but i dont have a pilot license yet... If I am gonna enroll how many flying hours would i complete to ge a british pilot license. I have flown Cessna R172, SF260 Marchetti and MD 520MG(Hughes 520). thanks, hope you can help me with it

it would be worthwhile contacting the Aero Club
(telephone number 0116 2592360) and speak with one of the flying instructors

happy memories

I stumbled by the LAC website by accident, and having learned to fly with you in 1979 under the RAF flying scholarship scheme, I thought I would just leave my sincere thanks to the LAC for inspiring/guiding me on my first steps into aviation. My instructor was Steve Riddington, and the CFI was Peter Green. I stayed with Steve and his family in Houghton on the Hill. I remember Steve's calm and professional manner, especially as most of the flying was carried out at crack of sparrows before Steve went to work. I would like to thank Steve and the LAC for their inspiration. I am a captain with Bristow Helicopters with Super Puma, Bell 214ST and Sikorsky S76 under my belt..Thank you LAC!!

Thanks for your nice words

Thanks for your nice words about the Club. Both Peter Green and I are still around and good to see that you are making your way in aviation. Pleased that we gave you a good start. Best regards Steve Riddington
