QDo I need to own my a plane to learn to fly?

We have a fleet of 9 club aircraft which you use when you are learning or once you have passed your test.

QHow far is Leicester airport from the city?

A

3 miles, not far of the A6 near Stoughton.

QDo I have to become a member of Leicester Aero Club to learn to fly from there?

A

Yes – Leicester Airport is run as a members club.

 

QHow much does it cost to learn to fly?

A

To obtain a PPL (private pilots licence) costs £7055 (£6630 if paid in advance).Prices include all text books, flying aids and test fees.

QDo I need any other qualifications?

A

No other qualifications, but you will require an aviation medical certificate is required to prove that you are fit enough to fly.

QWhat can I do once I get my licence?

A

The licence will entitle you to fly in fair weather during daylight.  Pilots can progress to obtain a night rating, instrument rating, aerobatic rating, commercial pilot license, flying instructor license etc.  These are also available from Leicester Airport.

QHow much paperwork is involved in obtaining a flying licence?

A

There are 7 exams which are within the capability of most students.

QHow long will it take me to pass?

A

A student has to complete 45 hours of flight training before taking a skills test.  You determine how long you take to complete this training.

QAre there any age restrictions on flying?

A

Flying hours can be logged from the age of 14, first solo flight from the age of 16 and a full PPL license from the age of 17. Other than that the ability to pass an aviation medical.

QI want to buy a flying voucher for a relative who is under 16 – is that possible?

A

Yes, an unaccompanied person may fly from the age of 12.

QDoes the club organise any social functions?

A

Yes.  The bar in open in the evenings and is very busy at the weekend. We also have larger more formal events.

QHow far in advance will I need to book my flying lesson?

A

Week days only require 2/3 days advance notice but weekends require are 2/3 weeks notice as they are the most popular time with many to fly.

QHow many members does the club have?

A

Around 500 members.

QHow safe is flying from the airport?

A

Leicestershire Aero Club is one of the safest flying clubs in the country with an excellent safety record.

A

No – at the moment you can join straight away.
