Flight Instructor (R)

The course may be conducted either full or part time and is designed to give the applicant training in both ground and flying instructional methods.
Pre –Course entry requirements
Before commencing an approved Flight Instructors Course an applicant must satisfy The Pre –entry reqirements as per JAR-FCL 1.335
  • Hold either a valid UK CAA or JAR-FCL aeroplane pilots licence, which includes a valid Single Engine Piston (Land) Class or single pilot, single Engine Type Rating.
  • Meet the Knowledge requirements for the grant of a JAR-FCL Commercial Pilot Licence(Aeroplanes as per Appendix 1 to JAR-FCL 1.470
  • Have at least 30 hours on single engine piston powered aeroplanes of which at least 5 hours shall be in the six months preceeding the pre-entry flight test.
  • Completed at least 10 hours instrument flight instruction in aeroplanes of which not more than 5 hours may be instrument ground time in a FNPT or a flight simulator.
  • Completed at least 20 hours of cross country flight as PIC of aeroplanes including a cross country flight of at least 540 km(300nm) in the course of which full-stop landings at 2 aerodromes different from the aerodromes of departure shall be made.
  • Pass a specific pre-entry flight test with a FI qualified as per JAR-FCL 1.330(f) based upon the proficiency check as per JAR-FCL 1.240(b) , within the six months preceeding the start of the course.

The Flight Instruction shall comprise of at least 30 hours of flight training of which

a) 25 hours must be dual instruction
b) 5 hours may be mutual flying with another FI applicant


Ground Training The Mandatory training for the FI rating requires 125 hours of theoretical knowledge instruction to include:

  • 40 hours tuition
  • 78 hours teaching practice
  • 7 hours progress tests

The course may also include the training requirements to allow night instruction.
On satisfactory completion of the course the applicant must pass an Instructor Skill Test with Flight Instructor Examiner.

APPLIED INSTRUMENT FLYING……….….. £840.00

Price includes 5 hours flying, 10 hrs ground school, & temporary club membership. Applicants must hold I/R or IMC rating unrestricted FI(A) with minimum
of 10hours instrument flying by sole reference to instruments (or 40 hours of flight under IFR). Rating restricted to teaching the I.M.C. rating only unless applicant has a minimum of 50 hrs flight by sloe reference to instruments (or 200hrs IFR)
