Training from an Unlicensed Airfield

The ANO has been amended so that flying training and testing below specified weights (2730kg for fixed wing and 3175kg for helicopters and gyroplanes) for the grant of a pilot's licence or the inclusion of an aircraft rating, a night rating or a night qualification need not be conducted from a licensed aerodrome. A new article 208A is introduced to place responsibility on aircraft commanders and aerodrome operators to be satisfied to the adequacy of an unlicensed aerodrome for the purposes of flying training and testing, before conducting or permitting it.

In order to assist aerodrome operators a revised version of CAP428 Safety Standards at Unlicensed Aerodromes will be produced. The change to the ANO came into force on the 14th of April and at present the revised CAP428 has not been published.

Leicester intends to remain a licensed airfield and will continue to be for the foreseeable future and will maintain the same level of Rescue & Fire Fighting Service and Air/Ground operation.
