Night Qualification

Night Rating

The course consists of at least 5 hours of flying with sole reference to instruments, up to 3 hours of the 5 may have been achieved during the PPL(A) Training.

There must be at least:

  • 3 hours dual instruction including at least one hour of night navigation.
  • There must also be 5 takeoff's and landings as Pilot-in-charge, one of which should be with a departure and re-join of the aerodrome traffic pattern.
The requirements for obtaining a Night qualification are that the applicant must have: 'completed satisfactorily a total of 50 hours as pilot of aeroplanes.', and 'Before starting a recognised course of night flying an applicant must have at least 20 hours as pilot-in-command of which 10 hours must have been gained since making application for a PPL(A).'

Night Qualification Privileges:

The holder of a night rating is able to fly with passengers within the UK during the hours of darkness. - See Schedule 8 of the Air Navigation Order for complete privileges.
